In honor of National Trail’s Day, the 15th Annual Hike and Bike Event was held on June 9th at the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails. The event was held in the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails parking lot, near the intersection of Route 93 and Route 424. The event was free to everyone. Free food was served compliments of: Capriotti’s, Hazle Park Meats, Premier Catering, Bimbo Bakeries, PepsiCo, Herr Foods, Quality Beverage, Gould’s Supermarket, Boyer’s Food Markets, Giant Food Stores, and Weis Markets. Arc Electric provided the generator use for the grills. Nearly 100 small Rose of Sharon bushes were provided to participants by AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer Audra Mitchell. The event began with a short memorial service by Rev. Jim DeRamus that consisted of mentioning new tree, bench, and table adoptions memorials honoring loved ones. Children’s Bike Helmets sponsored by PPL Electric Utilities, Attorney Frank Skokoski, and American Eagle Outfitters, were provided to children who needed them. Second Chance Wildlife had a live animal exhibit with a raccoon, skunk, groundhog, fox, and flying squirrel. A sponsorship from Billig-Helmes Insurance covered the cost of the animal exhibit and the bus service. Professor Carl Frankel and Ray Youngblood took many children and adults on a nature walk on the trail. DJ Tony Pacelli provided music for the event. Sponsorship and donations from Lehigh Valley Health Network, The Hershey Company, Alfred Benesch & Co., Attorney Pasco Schiavo, Hayden Electric, Arc Electric, Susan Nasrani, and Gillespie, Miscavige, and Ferdinand covered our additional expenses for this event. Many companies, members, and supporters provided raffle items for our raffle drawing, including a vacation to Myrtle Beach, SC from Sundance Vacations. Other displays included at the event were Eckley Miner’s Historic Village and Friends of Nescopeck.
